2010 SEASON

FARM UPDATES

Blueberry Field Notes

Our 2010 Blueberry season will come to a close on Sunday, August 8 at noon.  Up to that day, we will be open from 7am to 8:45pm, each day.

We are open rain or shine, while the Blueberries last.  Of course, if we are experiencing severe weather, we may have to close early.  So, it’s best to call.  Sometimes the roads flood, and we all want to be able to get out safely.

If you use Google or GPS to get directions to our Blueberry farm, be sure to enter Moorhead Rd and not Moorehead Rd.

Remember, we accept cash or checks (only good ones).  Sorry, but we do not accept credit or debit cards.

If ever we direct you to pick Blueberries in our field that is too far for you to walk, please tell us.  We have closer areas saved for that purpose.

The speed limit in the Bennette Estates subdivision is 30 mph.

Sunday, August 08, 2010

Our 2010 Blueberry season has come to the end, and our Blueberry field is closed.  We anticipate reopening the end of May or the first of June of 2011.  I’ll be posting updates during the Spring of 2011.  However, it won’t be until mid May as to when I will know the opening date.

I want to thank each and every one of you that came to our Blueberry farm this season.  It was a lot of fun.  Hope some of your Blueberries made it to the freezer.  But, if not, I’m sure you enjoyed them.

Also, those of you that came this season witnessed the most amazing crop of Blueberries.  We’ve never seen a crop like this one.  It’s going to be the season that we’ll be telling our grandchildren.  I’m really thankful to have received it and for you to have enjoyed it..

May you have a wonderful year, and I hope that we have a wonderful 2011 Blueberry season for you.

Thursday, August 05, 2010

Well with less than three days left in our 2010 Blueberry season, there just aren’t very many Blueberries left.  It’s really not worth the heat or the trip to get a few Blueberries.  Those that have come this week have gotten one to two pounds of Blueberries in about two hours.

We’re basically here because we promised to stay open to Aug. 8.  Many of our customers come just to experience the farm and to get away from it all, and that’s o.k.

For next year, check around mid May 2011.  By then, I will probably know how the upcoming season will be and the opening date.

Sunday, August 01, 2010

We have just one week left in our 2010 Blueberry season.  And, unfortunately, the picking is very slim.  But, we said that we would be open until Sunday, August 8, and that’s just what we are going to do.

So, should you decide to come, I would suggest that you come early in the morning around 7am or late in the evening around 6pm to avoid the hot sun.  Those that have come are averaging about 2 to 4 pounds of Blueberries.

I’ll be posting my next update Thursday evening.

Thursday, July 29, 2010

Our Blueberry season is coming to a close.  We are starting to run out of Blueberries in certain sections.  And, where they are, isn’t easy picking.  To get to where the Blueberries are, you have to go down the rows that are difficult to get through.  Pickers are getting 2 to 5 pounds between one and two hours.

So, if you don’t want to spend two hours, getting in the thick of it, to get four pounds of Blueberries, I recommend that you come next year, when there will hopefully be lots of Blueberries.

Blueberry picking will be fair through the weekend. And, the following week, it’s going to be much harder to find them.

Therefore, the last day of our 2010 Blueberry season will be Sunday, August 8, from 7am to noon.  Up to that day, we will be open each day, 7am to 8:45pm.

My next update will be Sunday evening.

Sunday, July 25, 2010

Well this past week, we got some pretty severe weather.  A total of 6.5 inches of rain and a windstorm.  Such that, a lot of Blueberries are on the ground.  However, there is still a good amount left on the bushes.

It looks like we have two weeks left in our Blueberry season.  Such that, this week will be good Blueberry picking and after that, it may be a struggle to fill your bucket.

Therefore, as it stands now, the last day of our Blueberry season will be Sunday, August 8.  It’s a little sad to see the end of this phenomenal Blueberry season.  But, I have no complaints and thankful that we got such a season..

My next update will be Thursday evening.

Thursday, July 22, 2010

I know it’s hard to believe, but we still have lots of Blueberries.  Such that, Blueberry picking will be excellent through the weekend.

It looks like our Blueberry season may go for two to three more weeks!. The latest we have ever gone was August 15th.  And, there is a chance that we may do that this year.  I’ll keep you informed.

Conditions at the Blueberry farm will be wet, so bring that change of clothing and an extra pair of shoes.

My next update will be Sunday evening.

Monday, July 19, 2010

I just finished checking the Blueberry field and it looks wonderful.  I was worried that the hard rain would knock off a lot of the Blueberries.  But, I couldn’t tell.  There are so many Blueberries.  Therefore, Blueberry picking will be fantastic all week.

The weather forecast for the week is rain.  So, it’s going to be wet amongst the Blueberry bushes but no standing water.  And, the road is going to be muddy but passable.

Our Blueberry season will go to the end of July.  And, it looks good enough; that we probably will go into August!  So, if you want to wait till it dries out, there should be plenty of Blueberries when that time comes.

I’ll post my next update Thursday evening.

Sunday, July 18, 2010

Well this afternoon, we got almost 5 inches of rain in a couple of hours.  So much that, we closed up the farm for the evening.  The water had crossed over the road that goes through the Blueberry field and made it impassable.  It should drain off by morning.  And, we will be open Monday at 7am.

Therefore, conditions at our Blueberry field will be wet until we dry off.  So, bring a change of clothing and shoes.

As for the Blueberries, before the rain, we still had an amazing amount of ripe Blueberries.  However, because of the rain, I was not able to check the Blueberry field this afternoon.  I’ll be able to do that tomorrow.  So, I’ll post an update on how the Blueberries look, Monday morning.

Thursday, July 15, 2010

Through the weekend, Blueberry picking will still be exceptional!  There are literally tons of ripe, sweet Blueberries everywhere.  They taste so good right now, that you’ll need to come  taste them for yourself.  And, of course, take a lot home with you.

In past years, when we were open this late, you would have to struggle to find Blueberries.  But, not this year!  There’s a huge chorus of Blueberries shouting, “Pick Me, Pick Me!”. So, come out and witness the excitement.

Still having so many Blueberries, makes it such that we will be open through the end of July and may go into August.

My next update will be Sunday evening.

Sunday, July 11, 2010

This week, Blueberry picking will be magnificent.  It is truly amazing to see so many Blueberries this late in July.  And, they are so sweet!  Many of our customers have been able to fill their buckets from just one or two bushes!

It still looks like our Blueberry season will at least go to the end of the month.  So, if you still have room in your freezer or your tummy, you’ll be able to fill it with our Blueberries, easily.

Conditions at the farm have greatly improved.  The Blueberry field is drying out, and the road has been graded.

I’ll post my next update on Thursday.

Thursday, July 08, 2010

Blueberry picking will be outstanding through the weekend.  There is still an unbelievable amount of ripe Blueberries!  Today, in the rain, we had a Newbie (first timer) pick 6 pounds of Blueberries in less than 45 minutes.  I picked 5 1/2 pounds in 30 minutes.  The trick is to get to a row where it’s difficult to go down, cause of the Blueberries making the branches hang over the row.  Then, you do a duck walk under the branches and come up to an opening.  Once there, you will be amazed at all the clusters of Blueberries, and truly witness the unbelievability of this Blueberry crop.

I am really thankful for spell check, because I really don’t know how to spell all these multi syllable adjectives.  Apparently, there is no such word as unbelievability. But, it is at our Blueberry farm!

The rain we received this week has made the bushes and the grass wet.  So, I recommend that you bring a change of clothing and shoes.  The road is muddy, but chances are none of you have recently washed your car.  So, it shouldn’t matter.

I’ll post my next update Sunday evening.

Sunday, July 04, 2010

Despite all the rain we got this past week, a total of 5 inches, Blueberry picking will be tremendous all week.  So, if you didn’t come because of the rain, not to worry, there are plenty of ripe Blueberries for you to pick.  It still appears that we will go to the end of July, and maybe, just maybe into August!

The condition of our Blueberry field is good.  There are a few wet places, but the majority of our Blueberry field is damp and not muddy.

My next update will be Thursday evening.

Thursday, July 01, 2010

Well, what can I tell you, but that Blueberry picking will be phenomenal the whole weekend.  Everywhere you look there are so many ripe Blueberries!  It’s easy pickings, and you should fill your one gallon bucket in less than an hour.

Concerning the weather, the bushes are wet and so is the grass.  But, it’s not muddy, or standing water.  Blueberries do best in well drained sandy soil.  So, bring a second set of clothes and shoes.  Because, until it dries off, you’re going to get wet.

We are open every day, 7am – 9pm, rain or shine, including July 4th.

My next update will be Sunday evening.

Sunday, June 27, 2010

For the week, Blueberry picking will still be unbelievable!  We will have plenty of Blueberries for your Red, White, and Blue festivities.  And, we will be open July 4th, 7am-9pm.

My friend, Tedd, told me to quit talking about the rains.  And, the only reason I quit was because we haven’t had any rain for about two weeks.  But, Thursday night we got 11/2 inches!  Which will only enhance our already enhanced Blueberries.  Such that, I foresee that our Blueberry season could last until the end of July!   So, you have plenty of time to fill up your freezer for the year and even the next year.

For those of you that like our early ripening varieties, Premier and Climax, we still have plenty for you to pick.  So, tell us and we will direct you to where they are.

I’ll post my next update Thursday evening.

Thursday, June 24, 2010

Blueberry picking for this weekend has been upgraded from excellent to unbelievable!  You won’t want to miss this weekend.  The later ripening varieties are really getting ripe.  And, there are lots and lots of them, mostly in clusters!  Such that, if you don’t fill your bucket in an hour, then your eating too many of them.  But, as always, we’ll weigh what’s in your bucket and not you.

I’ll post my next update, Sunday evening.

Now for some more exciting news.  Sprinkles Cupcakes recently opened their Houston store in Highland Village, 4014 Westheimer Rd., 713.871.9929, Mon-Sat 9 to 7 and Sun 10-6.  They are world renowned, as well, at our Blueberry Farm.  Their cupcakes are truly awesome.  In conjunction, we are so proud to announce that Sprinkles Cupcakes will be using our Blueberries in their Blueberry/lemon cupcakes, Jun 25-Jul11!

Sunday, June 20, 2010

There are still lots of ripe Blueberries to pick all this week. We are going through our transition phase   Where, we have the last of the early ripening varieties, and the beginning of the later ripening varieties.  We probably have a few days left of the early ripening varieties.  And, then, we will be picking the later ripening varieties, Tifblue, Powder Blue, Brightwell, and Garden Blue, the remainder of the week.  It looks like these varieties might be peaking this coming weekend.  Therefore, Blueberry picking should be excellent all month.

I’ll post my next update on Thursday evening.

Thursday, June 17, 2010

The Blueberry Fairy visited our farm last night and sprinkled sweetness through out our Blueberry field.  There are big, ripe, juicy Blueberries all over!  Lot’s of clusters too.  So Blueberry picking will be superb Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.  Should conditions change during those days, I will post an update accordingly.  Otherwise, my next update will be Sunday evening

Many have asked how long our Blueberry season will be.  And, for now, my best guess is mid July.  But, that can change.  So, don’t hold me to it.

Sunday, June 13, 2010

Well the weekend has ended and we are not picked out for the coming week.  With the later ripening varieties getting ripe each day, I think that Blueberry picking will get even better by Friday.

I’ll post you an update Thursday evening, to let you know.

Saturday, June 12, 2010

Have I mentioned how amazing this Blueberry crop is this year?  Well it is.  There are so many ripe Blueberries!  We have been picking the Premier Blueberry variety for the past two weeks.  Which for normal Blueberry seasons, that’s about as long as they last.  But, this year, we could be picking Premier for another two weeks!

By week’s end, the later ripening Blueberries, Tifblue, Brightwell, Powder Blue, and Garden Blue will be ready to pick.  Such that, I can visualize, very soon, that our entire Blueberry field will be ripe with all varieties!  Now that’s a peak!

So, this coming week, any day you wish to come pick Blueberries will be a great day for Blueberry picking!

I’ll post my next update Sunday evening, to let you know that we are not picked out after the weekend.

Thursday, June 10, 2010

Well Thursday is our new Friday, Friday is our new Saturday, and Saturday, well it’s still Saturday.  Which means for you if you come on those days in the morning, it’s going to be busy.  But, this Blueberry crop is phenomenal!  Everyone is getting more than enough Blueberries.  There are so many ripe Blueberries that it’s really hard for me to see where the pickers have picked!

What’s even more exciting is that the later ripening Blueberries are getting ripe faster than the early ripening varieties.  And, as far as sweetness, I think the later ripening Blueberries are sweeter.  And, this year they are bigger!

So, Blueberry picking is going to be great the remaining of the week.

My next update will be Saturday evening.

Tuesday, June 08, 2010

Today we got about .5” of rain which is good for the Blueberries.  But, it makes your picking a little wet.  I’d recommend that you bring an extra pair of shoes this week.

Blueberry picking will be great all week.  Some of the later ripening Blueberries are starting to get ripe.  So, if you wish to explore the field beyond the flagged areas, you’ll find some of those Blueberries.  It’s always fun to discover those Blueberries that no one else has found.

My next update will be Thursday evening

Sunday, June 06, 2010

Even after this weekend, with all the picking done, there are still lots and lots of ripe Blueberries!  The consensus of our regular pickers is that they have never seen this many Blueberries at our farm.

So not to worry about coming Monday or Tuesday, we are not picked out.  Both days will be great days for Blueberry picking.  And, it will continue through the week.

I’ll post my next update Tuesday evening.

Saturday, June 05, 2010

We had a busy Saturday, but it wasn’t as crazy as last week.  We did manage not to run out of buckets this time.  And, the good news for you is that they didn’t pick all the ripe Blueberries!  So tomorrow will be another good day for Blueberry picking.

Right now, the ripe Blueberries are Premier and Climax.  And, they are getting juicier and sweeter each day.  There are so many of them; that they should continue for another two weeks!  Then our other varieties should begin to get ripe.  And, they could last well into late July.

I’ll post my next update Sunday evening, for those of you that want to come to our farm the first of the week.

Thursday, June 03, 2010

Well I have good news for those of you that have been anxiously waiting for this update.  Since Tuesday, more and more Blueberries have gotten ripe!  Such that it will be good picking for Friday and Saturday.  So, when you come to our farm, look for the completely blue, plump Blueberries.  That’ll be the sweet ones.

Since Sunday, we have gotten more than 4” of rain!  The ground is wet, but we will be sending you to areas to pick where there is no standing water.  However, I would suggest that you bring a change of clothing and extra shoes.

I’ll post my next update Saturday evening.

Tuesday, June 01, 2010

The Blueberry field is getting bluer and bluer.  The only thing is, they are taking their time getting sweet.  We got more than 2” of rain Sunday night, which will let them swell and the hot days will help them get sweet. But for now, to fill your bucket, you will have to move from bush to bush.

I’m hoping that they will start sweetening in the next few days.  So, I will update my website this Thursday evening.  And, hopefully, I’ll be bringing you good news.  But, as one customer said, “you can’t rush Nature.”

Saturday, May 29, 2010

Today was the opening day for our 2010 Blueberry season.  And, what an opening day it was.  It was the largest turnout in the history of our farm.  There were so many pickers that at one time we ran out of buckets!  Such that, they picked us good and I mean good.  And, they didn’t leave very many ripe ones.  I think that we need about 4 to 5 days for the hot pink Blueberries to get ripe.  So if you can wait until Friday, It may be better.  But, not everybody waits.

Just know that if you come the next four days, the search for ripe Blueberries will be difficult.  But, we will still be here and help direct you where you will find some.

Wednesday, May 26, 2010

After thoroughly checking the Blueberry field, I am thrilled to announce that opening day will be this Saturday, May 29th!  We will be open from 7am to 9pm, 7 days a week, while the Blueberries last.

The varieties that are ripening are our largest Blueberries, Becky Blue, Climax, and Premier.

They are big and juicy, and there are lots of them.  Even though we will be opening this
Saturday, there are more to get ripe.  This weekend will be just the tip of the ice burg.  It looks like it will be excellent Blueberry picking all the month of June and beyond!

One quick note, on your route to the Blueberry farm, there is a lot of road construction on FM1314, especially at the turn off into Bennette Estates.  Such that, even with my signs, if you’re not looking, you’ll miss the turn.  So, be watchful.

Friday, May 21, 2010

With the two good rains we got this past week and the hotter weather, the Blueberries are appearing to catch up in ripening.  Such that, it looks like there is a good chance that we will be open for Memorial Day weekend. But, I’m not absolutely sure.

Therefore, I’m going to wait until this coming Wednesday to decide whether there will be enough ripe Blueberries to open up the field for Memorial Day weekend.  That’s five more days.  I will definitely know by then.

So, hold on.  We’re almost there.

Friday, May 14, 2010

Well, it’s been a month since my last update, and there are so many Blueberries!  The only thing is that, it looks like they are going to ripen late.  Which means that there is an outside chance that they will be ready for Memorial Day weekend.  That’s two weeks away.

So, it’s going to be a wait and see approach.  I’ll post another update next Friday.  Maybe by then, I’ll have a better idea as to when they are going to ripen.  And, when they do, it’s going to be awesome!

Wednesday, April 14, 2010

Greetings from Moorhead’s Blueberry Farm!

I have wonderful news to bring you today.  At this moment the Blueberries are looking really good.  We didn’t get hit by a late freeze.  So, if the weather cooperates, 2010 has the makings of a phenomenal Blueberry season. Because of this, we will be open seven days a week, 7am to 9pm, while the Blueberries last

The other good news is that for the 10th year the price of our Blueberries will be $1.50 a pound!

Now, I know what you’re thinking, “When are you opening the Blueberry field?”  At this time as in past years, my answer is, “I don’t know.”  But unlike past years, I REALLY don’t know.

They bloomed out two to three weeks late.  I have no experience with such a thing.

I should have a better idea this time next month.  So, look for my update during that time.
